How can we respond to the Trump presidency?

November 8, 2024 by Roland Leave a Comment

This post is clearly political and may offend some readers. I make no apology or excuse. As a psychotherapist my intention is to create individual and thus social change. Therapy is inherently political and progressive.

Many of us who work for a more compassionate and inclusive world are horrified and distressed by Donald Trump’s election as the next US president.  Friends and clients are overwhelmed with anxiety and anguish and find themselves unable to carry out the simplest of tasks. People are triggered and traumatized!

From a diagnostic perspective, it is clear that Donald Trump is a narcissist and possibly a sociopath; there is good reason to be fearful of the future and the damage he will do.  Yes, we should nurture hope, but we cannot delude ourselves things will turn out well.  Progressive will not be a surprised, but Trump voters may be in for a severe disappointment.

As a psychotherapist, my mission is to support and heal, to draw on the deep springs of humanity within us all and face reality with courage and clarity.  I am called to be there for my clients, for my self and for my community.  In future posts, I hope to address questions many are struggling with:

  • Why did normal American people vote for Trump?
  • What does Trump stand for in the American psyche?
  • How do we maintain a positive attitude in ourselves and our clients?
  • How will a swing toward authoritarianism affect us all and how should we respond?

Please feel free to comment and question.
